Synopsis

In the USSR in 1937, a newly appointed prosecutor discovers an undestroyed letter from a prisoner that reveals corruption in the secret police, the NKVD. His search for the truth becomes dangerous.
Moviegoers are saying
Sergey Loznitsa's Stalin-era courtroom drama divides audiences between those who appreciate its chilling examination of authoritarianism and those who find themselves literally nodding off during its deliberately paced 20-minute dialogue scenes. While critics praise its breathtaking portrayal of how totalitarian systems corrupt idealistic individuals, many viewers struggle with the film's somnolent pacing, with multiple reviewers admitting they fell asleep - ironically mirroring the protagonist's own drowsiness.

It would be a mistake to seek too many lessons from the film. Its great achievement is in the creation of a timeless nowhere that is both drawn from history and independent of it. That is the absurdist ideal.

A slow cinema treat, Two Prosecutors rewards patience, with endless waiting rooms and antechambers both a limbo state and a last-chance saloon for Kornyev. It’s a haunting, mesmerising, pessimistic piece of work.

The film is a satiric look at Stalinism and bureaucracy with shades of Kafka, Orwell, and Gogol.
