Rotten Tomatoes: 91% Metacritic Metascore: 58 IMDB: 6.8 84/100 Walter Crow Horse: "I just listen to the wind." Thunderheart is one of those criminally underrated thrillers from the early '90s that deserves way more love than it gets. Val Kilmer plays Ray Levoi, a hotshot…
The ProjectionistJan 30, 2024When the tribal council member of a reservation in South Dakota is killed, Val Kilmer’s Agent Ray Levoi (who happens to have some Sioux blood in him) is tasked along with the late Sam Shephard to investigate the case, which will lead him into a journey of discovery,…
Rafael "Mister Movie" JovineNov 15, 2017What it gets right: The FBI and other law enforcement agents work for the ruling class and will serve their interests regardless of the law. The ruling class's interest is in stripping the land of its resources so they can become wealthier, and it doesn't matter who dies…

Thank you to @Andy H for recommending this! Despite a few things I’ll talk about in my review, it’s nice to see Native representation in movies. I have a slight feeling that my girlfriend, who is part Native, wouldn’t exactly approve of this. There’s some scenes here that…
CriticalLemon97Jan 18, 2026A well done crime thriller with dramatic notes,"Thunderheart" is easily a bit of a gem hiding below the radar of things more talked about. The film is loosely based on the "Wounded Knee Occupation of 1973" but takes far more of crime noir approach than a direct historical…
Blake Bergman "Various Spaghetti"Jul 30, 2024Thunderheart is a perfect example of a film elevated by the talents of its director, Micheal Apted. The script is a boilerplate “whodunit?” narrative with buddy cop trappings sprinkled in, often utilized for comedy relief. With Apted at the helm, he’s able to utilize his…

Gonna go ahead and call this January official Graham Greene appreciation month after this and Clearcut. Dude has some serious screen charm. I've always liked him from Dances with Wolves (yes, I like that movie) but these last two movies he's just been the coolest son of a…
Ben PetersonMar 30, 2020Apted's documentary work of course informs this, both narratively (see INCIDENT AT OGLALA) and because it's loaded with detail, the kind of verisimilitude that augments every other aspect of the procedural. Without it this would definitely feel generic and even sort of…

In Thunderheart we get a real visual sense of the reservation, of the beauty of the rolling prairie and the way it is interrupted by deep gorges, but also of the omnipresent rusting automobiles and the subsistence level of some of the housing. We feel that we're really there, and that the people in the story really occupy land they stand on.
A film this intent on authenticity might easily grow dull, but this one doesn't; Mr. Apted is a skillful storyteller. He gives Thunderheart a brisk, fact-filled exposition and a dramatic structure that builds to a strong finale, one that effectively drives the film's message home.
Splendid landscapes and interesting faces - the usual virtues of the Western - keep the film burbling along, even as the actual plot is falling apart.
