Synopsis

A young girl, Sophia (Emily Matthews) spends the summer with her father (Anders Danielsen Lie) and grandmother (Glenn Close) on a small island in the Gulf of Finland, as the family grapples with the recent death of Sophia's mother.
Moviegoers are saying
This delicate Finnish island meditation divides audiences between those enchanted by its ethereal, vibe-driven storytelling and those left wanting more narrative substance. Glenn Close delivers what many consider one of her finest recent performances as a fiercely protective grandmother, anchoring Charlie McDowell's fragile mood piece that prioritizes atmosphere and emotional resonance over traditional plot structure.

The Summer Book is a haiku of a movie, conveying profound thoughts about time, memory, loss, and nature through a simplified, meditative, cinematic language of exquisite images and gentle music.

The Summer Book as a whole proves much too programmatic (an early don’t-worry-it’s-nothing cough sets the tone) and much too fearful of leaving its audience in the dark about the characters’ emotional states (hence its symbolic clutter).

The cumulative experience is affecting in its own minor-key way, an appealing throwback to old-fashioned family dramas of a more innocent era.
