the third act here is the best horror film of the year. an almost unbearably excruciating escalation of tension over the course of three hours made all the more affecting thanks to the inclusion of real world terrors occurring simultaneously. urgent, unforgettable…
zoë rose bryantMay 25, 2024Art as the match that lights the fuse to the dynamite of change. This is why movies matter. Overwhelmed by the courage from the entire cast & crew, hope everyone gets a chance to see this.
Joe AMay 24, 2024Free Iran, Free Palestine, free our hearts and minds from the tyranny of weak men and their fears.

Mohammad Rasoulof has crafted one of the best & most courageous films of the year. THE SEED OF THE SACRED FIG is a riveting familial drama where modern & traditional values clash in present-day Iran, building to a tense climax. Features outstanding performances from Soheila…
Matt NegliaMay 24, 2024there are some bits in here that soured things for me: while making the father an avatar for the iranian state might make for a neat metaphor, it means he’s not a character in his own right, which blunts the messaging in a way that some western audiences will lap up. for…
farahMay 24, 2024The last act shift is a little too chaotic and I do wish some of the characters were more than their initial beats entail—but the craft and courage required to make this film is so overwhelming.

“I want my family back.” It is, frankly, wonderful that The Seeds of the Sacred Fig exists at all. It is remarkable that the director managed to make it to Cannes, fleeing exile from Iran. This is an important, urgent, notable and worthy work. With all of that in mind, it…
RegelegorilaFeb 5, 2025The only time IG reels is used for a good thing Horrifying paranoia and oppression. A stunning work that must be viewed, simply for the grueling nature it took to get us to be able to.

near 3 hours long yet it's neither slow nor boring. other than occasionally pausing and pacing back and forth cuz of how anxious i felt at times, i was glued to my seat. did not like the tom and jerry sitch towards the end, but knowing what Rasoulof was going through it's excused
cool elements and tight build up that derail comically at the end sequence: they aimed at terminator but ended up hitting tom and jerry. political elements such as the films vision of irans predicament on the international stage also sound very propagandy after the us bombings
The film, although almost three hours long, escapes boredom and generates a lot of stress and disbelief due to the story and the way it tells how a family man can change at any moment and become a very dangerous enemy, and all for not Pay attention to where you leave things.

A great film with a lot of powerful things to say. I will admit that I think it was a little heavy handed at times in its structure, but that doesn’t take away from the genuinely phenomenal messages. They’re all presented with strong filmmaking and passion. Please see this.
The director here uses a family dynamic to skillfully mirror Iran’s political climate. I love how it uses real footage from protests in between the fictional storytelling. It’s not a perfect film but this political thriller will have your eyes glued to the screen. 8
