This would have gone hard in 8th grade history class after a slice of square pizza for lunch.
Kellen GallagherSep 7, 2024I deserve some kind of award for keeping composure while seeing Voldemort’s peepee in a room full of cinephiles
livSep 8, 2024Not lore-accurate. Odysseus wouldn't have been circumcised.

The slow, arty, depressed sequel to Troy that similarly strips Homer's poem of its mythology and instead focuses on the human melodrama of ancient post-war regret. Despite the limitation of this clearly just looking like a bunch of shirtless dudes in robes hanging out on an…
Josh LewisJan 14, 2025THE RETURN. Ralph Fiennes’ turn as an aging, muscle-bound, prosthetically enhaced Odysseus is a revellation. Just when you suspect those who say TV offers nothing to thinking adults, something like this turns up.
Paul SchraderJan 10, 2025Dogs are the best. 🐕 I love you Argos.

Christopher Nolan has his work cut out for him. "The Odyssey" is not an easy text to adapt to screen, though I’m optimistic his version will be significantly more compelling than this, with all due respect. An extra $200 million in the budget will probably help. But it will…
Keegan WJan 2, 2025Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche are spellbinding in this new rendering of Odysseus's trip home after the Trojan War, and it's a good thing because other than the magical duo, the film doesn't offer much else. In its defense, it is set up like that. It's basically a stage…

The cinematography is unbelievable, but it's still not enough to make me 'return'. Overall, it feels like what it is. A 70s-style Italian cinema piece with a few modern iterations and a crazy good camera. The story and pace definitely and deliberately make you wait, centring you between so many…
The entire movie I was just saying Odysseus quit being a chach. Go home dude. I know this is a rendition of something I haven’t read and if it’s the ending of the odyssey I have just forgotten then. so I cannot rate it fairly with that in mind. However it was a very slow burn movie, satisfying…

Taking a slower, more Shakespearean approach to the tale of Odysseus’ return, this film contains a simmering anger behind it. Driving the narrative forward with a contemplative skew on themes of revenge, war and honor while the grounded nature lends itself to richer development.
It was pretty slow. For those who enjoyed the full story it makes sense, but for those coming into it, it’s just a whiny son and woman who takes forever to make a decision about anything

Focused on the latter half of the Odyssey, main two leads are great, everything else is okay but too slow
Watching this brought back memories of the episode of wishbone where they told this story 🐶🤣

Pasolini has taken a classic, set thousands of years In the past, and very subtly pulled out themes about masculinity and power, about the psychological and emotional toll of war and PTSD, and its way of changing a person’s way of being. These are things that, unfortunately, still speak to the modern world.
With bold performances, a strong vision for the source material, and a wise decision to focus on this under-represented portion of this narrative, The Return makes for an effective character piece that proves these stories are not only timeless, they’re as timely as ever.
The Return looks rather cheap: there’s a real lack of pictorial beauty here, even if you can tell it was shot in a nice location. That wouldn’t be an issue if the prestige-television grit applied to this oft-told tale had a little more passion.
