1995-era Russell Crowe shoot me in a complicated way
David SimsJun 13, 2018A western by and for people whose brains have been fried by movies, the old dramatic tropes and stock characters have become so comfortably familiar that real pleasure must be mined from subtle subversions and flamboyant style. In other words, a spaghetti western, but one…
JoeApr 8, 2022Of all the ’90s movies critics got wrong, this one might be their worst blunder. Even after I fell in love with Sam Raimi I waited a long time to watch this, mostly because it had been beaten into me that this was a shallow, superficial, melodramatic Western. In fact, it’s…

I get the accusations of this as a shallow technique/pastiche exercise for Raimi but I don't care. His overly dynamic, exaggerated comic-book visuals punching up these particular archetypes and iconography is just a total blast to watch in action. Every extreme dutch…
Josh LewisFeb 28, 2025Directors are still ripping off shots from this — just saw one nodding to the hole in Keith David’s head a few weeks back. Amusingly, this whole movie is a compendium homage to slick Leone-Eastwood stuff that Sam Raimi ingested, metastasized, and made bigger. It is now a…
Sean FennesseySep 22, 2013When I was a ten-year-old brat I watched this movie on tv. The next day I found out from some of my classmates that they also watched it. We loved it so much that we copied the dueling competition from the movie. We would spend our breaks pretending to be gunfighters,…

If someone had told me twenty years ago there was a Sam Raimi movie that was basically Bloodsport with guns in the Wild West, I would have watched it a million times and made it my new personality.

A great Western with an awesome female hero (Sharon Stone) by Sam Raimi.
A very funny western directed by the talented Sam Rami. It has a great cast like Sharon Stone, Leo DiCaprio and Russel Crow. The story also bears a lot of similarities to old Spaghetti westerns and perhaps the biggest one is that the story feels like a Clint Eastwood western.
This was one of those that I kind of been wanting to watch for the longest time (30 years) but really wasn’t in a huge rush to, obviously. I couldn’t believe how stacked this cast was! I mean, Russell Crowe, Leonardo DiCaprio, Keith David, Lance Henriksen, and Gary Sinise!

Incredibly underrated spaghetti inspired western from director Sam Raimi ( Dr. Strange 2, Evil Dead, Spider-Man. Sharon Stone, Russell Crowe and an adolescent Leonardo DiCaprio give worthy performances. Did I mention Gene Hackman is at his villainous best?
First western I've ever watched and I'm 33. Completely caught me by surprise with how amazing it was! Sharon Stone and Leonardo Dicaprio were amazing in it. Couldn't recommend it enough, I love the while gun tournament and all the characters.

Interesting twist on standard faire. Capitalizing on Stone's popularity at the time, the film wins with Hackman and a young Leo. Toss in a young Crowe and it makes for a much more interesting watch.
My dad chose this for movie night--- didn't expect it to like it, but glad I gave it a shot! Also why is everyone so fine in this movie? Well, only the main cast of course...
