Synopsis
Soprano Nadine Sierra takes on one of the repertory’s most formidable and storied roles, the haunted heroine of Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor, in an electrifying new staging by Australian theater and film director Simon Stone, conducted by Riccardo Frizza. Tenor Javier Camarena adds to the bel canto fireworks as Lucia’s beloved, Edgardo, with baritone Artur Rucinski as her overbearing brother, Enrico, and bass Christian Van Horn as her tutor, Raimondo.

Having seen versions of Shakespeare plays on stage brought up to 20th and 21st century, I have become somewhat accustomed to these transitions to more modern settings. As such, I enjoyed the 'Rust Belt' setting of Lucia. The bell canto music and singers, as one might expect, could be different but could not likely be improved upon. Experiencing the complex staging was a treat and should be commended for design, engineering, and execution. Only the Met could have undertaken such a huge task.
Wonderful music and singing but the background and staging was a bit distracting. Not sure I "bought" the transposition of this 19th century music to 21st century Detroit!!
