Synopsis

Rising American composer Matthew Aucoin brings a captivating new take on the ancient Greek myth of Orpheus—who attempts to harness the power of music to rescue his beloved from the underworld—to the Met. Featuring a libretto by MacArthur “Genius Grant” recipient Sarah Ruhl, the opera reimagines the familiar tale from Eurydice’s point of view. Met Music Director Yannick Nézet-Séguin conducts an immersive new staging.

For a new opera, there was a lot to dig into. The cast was outstanding, from Erin Morley pullling the character of Eurydice from inside her, to J.J. Orlinski as the spirit double of Orpheus. But the revelation to me was the focused performance of Joshua Hopkjns as the living Orpheus, both in his singing and his acting. He may just be my new favorite barihunk.

The singing was wonderful as was the music, staging and costumes. Unfortunately the transmission was terrible as there were constant interruptions throughout. This was very distracting and annoying.
