You know me, give me an 85-minute movie shot on Kodak with a comeback performance about the feminine pain of ageing and we’re in business.
Lillian CrawfordJan 8, 2025The most ‘that’s it?!’ ending ever, after an hour and a half all this really has to show for itself is good ideas and a genuinely magnetic performance from Pamela Anderson. Because of her you are instantly drawn to a character who is underserved by a pretty bad script that…

Really, really beautiful score and production design, but the way this was shot and, more crucially, written really irked me. So much expository dialogue without ever moving into what happens once you have set that exposition up. Which is a shame because the idea is good,…

Wanted to like it more than I did, but I still think it was good. Pamela Anderson and Jamie Lee Curtis were amazing, the cinematography was gorgeous, and the score was amazing. But, it was just lacking in storytelling.
Really wanted to like this but it just felt so shallow and underdeveloped. Some great performances, but otherwise terrible writing. The main character is pretty insufferable and the emotional payoff of the ending doesn’t work because it’s so unrealistic based on what the film previously…

The outfits and acting were great, though I felt the script lacked depth. The way the plot was depicted by the director wasn’t my favorite either. I think there was more potential for this movie, but they kept it short and straight to the point. There’s only so much theycan show.
Essentially a vehicle for Pamela Anderson to showcase the culmination of her own somewhat similar career. But as a film on its own, its not quite as refined and thematically fleshed out as Gia’s usual works, relying more on banking that you'll feel as nostalgic as the characters.
The weird color “filter” they chose makes it look like the movie was shot with the “retrica” app (if it still exists) and it’s slightly nauseating. Important detail: JLC cosplaying as Donald Trump. That’s it. The acting is great but the story has the depth of a puddle. 6/10

There’s so much in this film that makes me want to love it so much but I just needed a little more story. The performances were so good and I loved the direction it was taking us in. Much more attentive to aesthetics and atmosphere. The good outweighs the bad for me. 7.5
Really close to being a love on this one. It’s basically a character study and has great production, cinematography and acting. Would’ve liked to see a little more depth from it. Anderson definitely redeems herself as an actress, likely helped by a better director.

Loved the story! Pamela Anderson is Fabulous!!!!
Never evolved, Shelly stayed in her fantasy!
Metacritic
Like Imitation of Life, The Last Showgirl treats high-gloss femininity as a form of false consciousness, an ideal imposed upon women that ends up alienating them from each other, particularly mothers from their daughters.
Modestly scaled and loosely plotted, it is an unusually tender movie and an ideal vehicle for Coppola’s gift for expressing the intangible and the ephemeral.
Only Anderson’s part with all its hazy contradictions — neither comic nor tragic, neither pathetic nor heroic, neither subtle nor showy — seems, to transcend. More than the film around her, Anderson earns our respect.
