i do think that every murder mystery movie would be improved substantially by including a gay couple who care only about cricket and not about whether other people's lives are in danger
noraJan 2, 2021the whodunnit is the most well known sub-genre of murder mystery but shout out to the whereyouat
Shane McAvoyMar 10, 2014"Cricket, sir. Cricket!" This is one of the funnier Alfred Hitchcock films and up there with The Man Who Knew Too Much (1934) and The 39 Steps (1935) as Hitchcock's best British work of the 30s. The pacing so different. Taking it's time for a seemingly irrelevant…

shoutout to the video essay on the criterion special feautures that spent three whole minutes talking about how charters and caldicott are in love and are afraid of women
eelyJul 18, 2024I gotta shoutout the opening shot where they built an entire village with miniatures to do this sweeping crane shot. It even has a little mini moving car!
Patrick WillemsAug 24, 2020Hitchcock's genre-bending train-set mystery, THE LADY VANISHES is both suspenseful and comedic (extreme Brit humour) with surprising political undertones, one of the most entertaining pre-Hollywood Hitchcock films. Michael Redgrave and Margaret Lockwood make an adorable…

phoebe 💫Apr 28, 2022Just because there is a transcontinental crisis, doesn’t mean there can’t also be comedy. And, “The Lady Vanishes” has some of the best of both comedy - and crisis - in all of Hitchcock. “I never think you should judge any country by its politics,” a character remarks…
theriverjordanDec 19, 2020The Lady Vanishes is Hitchcock's most hilarious work I've seen so far. Compared to Hitchcock's Hollywood efforts, this one is unapologetically British, from its signature British dry humor, to the overt British patriotism that's wonderfully in sync with the prewar era it's…

👍👍 Hitchcock at the top of his game even back in '38. Has an eerieness to it, while also being oddly charming & witty. More music could have added to the atmosphere further, but it is what it is. The characters, especially the main pair, are incredibly likable and cute, and train settings are…
It was a pretty good mystery thriller with some humor you don't expect from Hitchcock. I'd say the final act definitely brought this up and made it memorable. The fight scene was hilarious too and probably my favorite part.
