Did You Know?

  • The 'case' of the 'star' Caroll to find out the 'data' held on him, was - initially - successful (in Jan. 2019): so he (through his shown onscreen lawyer, Naik) actually 'won': but Caroll wanted more: viz. the source AND the basis of that revealed data held on him, that was used ('harvested') to create the behavioral predictions made (formatted) on him; plus the details of any parties with which that data had been shared - i.e. the curiosity to know how a 'mass sentiment' change might be effected - but which failed (read, was frustrated) when Cambridge Analytica went into voluntary liquidation (administration), as curtailing the case with no further defendant.

    • [in front of committee of inquiry]
    • Herself - Former Director of Business Development for Cambridge Analytica: I have been offered introductions to clients that I refused to meet with before, such as the Alternative for Germany and Marine Le Pen's campaign. I refused to even get on the phone call with them.

As eye-opening and propulsive as the movie is, Amer and Noujaim don’t always keep the thread of their multi-faceted narrative, which was going to be a daunting task for any well-meaning filmmaker trying to give you arresting personalities while parsing complex aspects of the digital world.

The Great Hack uses a decent rehash of the Cambridge Analytica scandal as the starting point for an interesting two-pronged character study, an instigation for provocative ideas about data crime and what is ultimately a really, really, really conflicted look at when it's terrifying having corporations learning things about our online habits and when it's cool.

The film spends more time dramatizing the scandal’s worst-case scenario than examining the facts — producing compelling personal narratives at the cost of valuable context and perspective.
