I will always return to this film for that final monologue. It is one of the most beautifully written speeches ever put to film.

"I'm sorry, but I don't want to be an emperor. That's not my business. I don't want to rule or conquer anyone. I should like to help everyone if possible." That final five minute speech given by Chaplin shows his true genius as a director, actor, and screenwriter. He was…
Esteban GonzalezFeb 12, 2015Nothing less than a grand and startling picture; Charlie Chaplin's The Great Dictator is one of the best films involving Chaplin, even in spite of a somewhat disjointed narrative and some overlong stretches. The sense of melancholy and serene sadness by the end of it…
SilentDawnAug 16, 2015This is one of those films history judges, but I'm not sure how it judges it. Did it help us defeat Hitler? I've no idea. You hear all the time in relation to this film that Chaplin said he wouldn't've been able to make it if he knew the true horrors of the concentration…

"Listen..." anti-fascist art is and has always been invaluable to society, and The Great Dictator may be the crown jewel. this being chaplins first sound film not only elevates the elaborateness of the comedy but also the vital importance of why it's imperative to resist…
WesMay 23, 2014The Great Dictator was released at a time when people were anxious not to offend Hitler and Mussolini, and when discrimination against Jews was rampant but nobody imagined that it would end in one of the cruelest massacres in human history. Chaplin predicted it all, and for…

One of Charles Chaplin's masterpieces, and the human historical discourse in the end is the most wonderful thing in the movie. 9/10
Like all major Chaplin works, Dictator was a cheaply, but methodically, made film, a cardboard act of humanist defiance, and, thanks to its purity of purpose, the cheesier the jokes get, the harder they land.

Was good in Cabinet Rooms. I nodded off for parts but I had slept badly. Slapstick was mostly very good. Visual effects were very impressive for the time, upside down gag. OG “it’s-a bigga mistaka”. Italian and German “language” was hilarious with coughs, ü sound. Huge end speech
The final scene is iconic and incredible. One of Chaplin’s best performances and one of his best films. Knowing the backstory and behind the scenes stuff brings a whole new appreciation for what Chaplin did with the film. A film everyone should see in their lifetime

A teacher recommended this movie to me so I will do the same. At first I thought it was a typical Charlie Chaplin film, but in the end his skill created a wonderful film: a bundle of comedy in the darkness of reality.
Charlie Chaplin both writes, directs and stars in this masterpiece showing the viewer both sides of a terrible regime. You can either watch this on HBO Max or purchase it for the criterion collection
