THE FIRE INSIDE is the inspirational true story of Claressa Shields, arguably the greatest female boxer of all time. Claressa, a high school Junior from Flint, Michigan, aided by her tough-love coach, Jason Crutchfield, pushes past all limitations to become the first American woman to win an Olympic gold medal in boxing. quite remarkable and beautifully acted; doing something new with the sports movie while still pushing all the familiar buttons is genuinely hard to do

Sean FennesseyDec 30, 2024Gets the classic sports biopic stuff in and then reminds us that the story doesn’t end there, especially not for a girl like Claressa Shields in a sport that wasn’t “for” women at the time. I loved the emphasis on the value of coaching and what her success meant to the…

Boxing was the easiest fight this woman has ever had.
Kit LazerDec 27, 2024Deviates from most other boxing films’ rhythms by placing the big fight at the center of the film instead of having the third act culminate into it. This notion points us toward the true fight that Claressa Shields has dedicated much of her time toward: equality in sports,…

Like the real life boxer this movie is based up on, this is too damn good to be ignored. Pound for pound this is deeply inspiring and emotionally heavy. I needed this.

cobOct 18, 2024A terrific third act that tells the part of inspirational sports dramas that most movies leave out: what happens after the gold medal. Only other movie I can think of that even nods to that is… wait for it… the one the only…. Foxcatcher, baby.

6.6 - The style, structure, writing are cliché “feel good sports story.” There’s a training montage, a coach athlete argument, a returned figure from the past, & even a looking out a bus window shot. But I like those stories generally, & Claressa Shields is absolutely a name a lot more people…
The movie begins as a boxing bio, but it finished as a tragic story of the unfair world of sports for women’s pay. it’s not a bad film, but it feels like every other biopic underdog story I’ve seen. It just doesn’t have enough interesting plot lines to set it apart from others.

Got to see this early through Cinemark's Secret Movie series. Even though it has some weaknesses, it's unique enough for a sports movie and a SUPER impressive debut for both the director and the star. BTH also kills but he kinda repeated himself a lot.
This felt fairly cliched to me, a typical sports movie crowd pleaser. Definitely not all bad but I just think I’ve seen this done a lot better. It just never really takes off. But I liked the focus on her and women’s marketing in sports. 5

Had potential, but I felt like it ended and showed us her triumphant story, but was disappointed that we didn’t get that during the film. It just felt like it missed the mark.
pacing was everywhere, lot of missed deposition that should’ve been explained, and the boxing was lackluster but not bad movie plus based off true story

Claressa's story is so important for female and male urban youth to see. She's unconventional and has been through so much. She deserves so much more respect and attention from the world. Congratulations on her achievement and success!!!
It made me cry, it made me cheer. Inspiring true story.

Altogether, The Fire Inside is a strong directorial debut for Rachel Morrison, boasting excellent performances from Ryan Destiny and Brian Tyree Henry.
While it ticks all the expected boxes for a sports drama, it’s also something more.
Women’s sports owes a debt to Shields. She finally has a movie that gives her deserved flowers.
