Synopsis
In Yosemite National Park there exists vertical rock formation called El Capitan, and on it there is a seemingly impossible 3,000 foot sheer rock face that catches the first light of the day: The Dawn Wall. Nobody had ever free climbed it, until January of 2015, when legendary climber Tommy Caldwell and his partner Kevin Jorgeson made their attempt. After 6 years of practicing and strategizing, the men started their climb – spending weeks living on the side of that vertical cliff as they slowly made their ascent and capturing the attention of the world in the process. But as the Caldwell’s aspiration borders on obsession, he’s going to need to make a tough call: whether to abandon his partner to reach the top or risk the entire attempt for the sake of their friendship. The Dawn Wall won the Audience Award for Documentary Spotlight at the 2018 SXSW Film Festival.

Metacritic
Filmmakers Lowell and Mortimer were there to document every excruciating inch, with stunning Yosemite scenery as their backdrop for almost every striking frame. The film they got out of it is, like the experience they were documenting, one of a kind.
The Dawn Wall transcends initial conventional sports documentary trappings, emerging as an affecting portrait of conquering personal limitations.
It's the camerawork by director of photography Brett Lowell and cinematographer Corey Rich (along with many other contributors) that impresses the most here. Close-ups show just how precise and physically challenging the climbers' moves are.
