Synopsis
Starring Odessa Young and Joe Cole, The Damned follows a 19th-century widow who is tasked with making an impossible choice when a ship sinks off the coast of her isolated fishing outpost during the middle of an especially cruel winter.

Semmy lovedThe DamnedSurprisingly very good. Didn’t know much going into it but it was a whole lot different than I imagined. At first I was a little hesitant due to its slow start but with every night the plot began to thicken. It was a lot more gruesome and suspenseful than I anticipated. 8.2/10.

I really liked this, so much so that it’s almost a “love” for me. I really liked the buildup, mythology, and tension. The last 45 minutes tapered in quality a little bit from the beginning but I still really enjoyed it. The twist ending works and doesn’t work at the same time.
I know nothing lovedThe DamnedI’m was almost disappointed with the mythological silliness but the final revelation really elevates the movie. It also raises important questions about the fate of the other fishermen, now that we know the main character pov to be unreliable.

Its tension weakens, and tediousness sets in, though that effectively evokes what the characters are experiencing. But a period of slog reduces the story’s immersive quality, slowing momentum. What’s best about the movie, though, is how it eventually picks back up and morphs into something a bit different from straight-ahead horror.

Young is very good in her part, making Eva a strong, flawed character whose depth helps to counterbalance the shallowness of everyone else. On the whole, however, The Damned wasn’t able to achieve what I was hoping from it and, rather than being an overlooked gem, it’s instead simply “overlooked.”
