Synopsis

Canadian film and music video director Julien Christian Lutz – better known as “Director X” – gives us a brutal, updated take on the original 1972 blaxploitation film Super Fly. In Superfly, career criminal Youngblood Priest is planning “one last score” before he extricates himself from the Atlanta drug scene. Unfortunately for Priest, the all-white clad, coke-dealing gang known as Snow Patrol (not to be confused with the Northern Irish rock band) isn’t going to make it easy for him. Starring: Trevor Jackson, Jason Mitchell, Lex Scott Davis, Michael Kenneth Williams, Jennifer Morrison.

I was pleasantly surprised by SUPERFLY and it exceeded my expectations. The acting was flawless and well executed. This is a unique gangster drama without the usual cliches, what a breath of fresh air. I will definitely be seeing SUPERFLY again!

Antwan Big Boi Patton appears in an entertaining role as Atlanta’s weaselly mayor. Atlanta may have dibs on Youngblood Priest this time, but even though the character is still fly in this reboot, it would be a stretch to regard him as truly superfly.

SuperFly is a slicked-up, tricked-out revamp that dispenses with any pretense of verisimilitude in favor of rap-video extravagance and mob-movie bloodshed.
