Synopsis

Alice is a reclusive writer, resigned to a solitary life on the seaside cliffs of Southern England while World War II rages across the channel. When she opens her front door one day to find she's to adopt a young London evacuee named Frank, she's resistant. It's not long, however, before the two realize they have more in common in their pasts than Alice had assumed. Gemma Arterton, Gugu Mbatha-Raw and Tom Courtenay star in this intensely emotional story of love's endurance in trying times.

This is a movie about a lesbian relationship. I shouldn’t have to get halfway through the movie to find that out. So I’m putting it out there so other people know it up front. It was a nicely shot film and an interesting story. The main arc is about a child who is displaced by WWII and has to live with an eccentric hermit of a woman who doesn’t want him. There is a secondary storyline about the woman reminiscing about a gay lover from the past. Over the course of the film, the secondary storyline takes front-and-center stage. The film becomes all about the gay relationship. The film preaches about gay relationships and uses the child actor as a prop to not-so-subtly bash intolerant adults who don’t embrace their lifestyle. In the end, the writer makes sure to kill off the husband so the gay couple can live happily ever after. The ending is glib and trite and doesn’t honor the mood of the story.

My biggest frustration with Summerland is three major plotlines mixed like a tossed salad. Each plot is interesting to watch as well as engaging, but transitions from one to the next can clash with the good feelings generated by the previous.

Arterton’s at a peak in her career here, repurposing bits and pieces of her work in Their Finest for a film with much more intentional sentiment.

As capable as the actors are, I can't say I cared much about any of the characters, which made the emotionally uplifting climax feel underpowered. The scope for which this handsome but bland film strives so hard is present mainly in the wide-open spaces of its picturesque locations.
