I'd try vainly to call this film out for its absurd presumptuousness, its pomposity, for being ultimately a film about how comedies help the poor and meek and so on, but I've watched 200 movies in the last three months in a vain attempt to fight off severe depression. I…
Sally Jane BlackApr 27, 2020the fact that veronica lake was 6-8 months pregnant while filming this movie and yet still managed to look like joel mccrea’s tiny little 12 year old son in the tramp scenes...that’s what I call talent baby!!!
eelyFeb 14, 2025I loved every second, every scene, every exchange of dialogue — simply incredible! The film tells the story of John L. Sullivan, protagonist and professional sufferer (sorry). He decides that his calling is to make a serious film. Something deep, devastating, a punch to the…

86/100 "There's nothing like a deep-dish movie to drive you out in the open." "What are you talking about? Film's the greatest educational medium the world has ever known. You take a picture like Hold Back Tomorrow—" "You hold it."* Glorious in ways that need no…

In some ways 2.5 stars feels generous given the extent it feels like Sturges botched a brilliant premise. That premise -- an attack on Hollywood for its artistic pretension in assuming that a bunch of rich people could say anything meaningful about what it feels like to…

brendan o'hareJan 17, 2026The first 7 minutes makes my head spin from how fast and sharp the dialogue is and it makes as a perfect introduction to such a film!!!! The train brawl sets a sense of “do I know where this is going?” that later comes in handy for the 3rd act. I’d like to watch the full…

"There's a lot to be said for making people laugh. Did you know that's all some people have? It isn't much, but it's better than nothing in this cockeyed caravan." ♡ Incredible, 4/5.
That was one hell of a ride! I'm always down for a screwball-type comedy, and this one's got heart to it too. I love the final lines given from Sullivan's character. Veronica Lake was beautiful but also a blast of fun with her comedy, along with Joel McCrea's performance too.
Really fun screwball comedy that was way ahead of its time. Incorporated a strange level of postmodernism and self-referentialism which is cool for a film this old. The chemistry is palpable between the leads and the screwball nature is completely delightful. Great film

A dubious proposition, but in Sturges’s hands a charming one, filled out by his unparalleled sense of eccentric character.
Brooks is the one who makes the message work, the one who should have been credited and the supporting player who makes “Sullivan’s Travels” worth the journey. He’s the difference between a good film of the Depression Era, and a classic.
