It’s one of the wilder footnotes in modern American history: At 3:30pm on the afternoon of September 22, 1975, a conservative 46-year-old single mom named Sara Jane Moore attempted to assassinate the President of the United States on the street outside of San Francisco’s…
davidehrlichOct 8, 2024great acquisition of archival footage; stressful movie... incredible subject. filmmakers frustratingly seem to lack POV completely — letting the (again: great) footage do the talking for them. hard to know where to land the plane for anyone involved, myself included having…
fran hoepfnerOct 9, 2024NYFF62 Film #26 I think the reason that would-be Presidential assassin Sara Jane Moore isn't better known or considered to be a more pivotal figure in 1970's politics, is because she doesn't have that extra juice that makes her story sensationalized. She wasn't in the…

NYFF62 Film #21 aka Don DeLillo's Forrest Gump: The Documentary Half expected it to be revealed partway through that Sara Jane Moore had had an affair with Lee Harvey Oswald at some point
MrMustacheOct 9, 2024The hallmark of a great documentary is either an incredible story or a fascinating, complex character — Suburban Fury has a bit of both. It tells the story of Sarah Jane Moore, who attempted to assassinate Gerald Ford in 1975. It’s a lesser-known story in American history,…

Aurora San MiguelMay 21, 2025My first time at the Seattle Film Festival! This was an interesting but incredibly frustrating documentary. Really really fascinating way of framing this event and while she’s a fascinating character, I just wish there was just something… a little bit more substantial.…

What this story reminds us isn’t that a woman named Sara Jane Moore was radicalized into action, but that history — for all of the larger than life sweep that word implies — is ultimately written on a level too personal for textbooks to ever understand.
Suburban Fury is a reminder that even the most candid historical figures are never fully transparent.
The movie functions mostly as personal testimony — a riveting, if too often searching, autobiography of a figure whose political transformation is haunted by narrative inconsistencies.
