This sexy, stylish thriller is one of the most surprising movies of the year. Matthew McConaughey plays Baker Dill, a fishing boat captain who makes a small living running tours off the shores of secluded Plymouth Island. Dill’s life is turned upside down when his ex-wife Karen (Anne Hathaway) shows up with a request. She says her husband (Jason Clarke) is violently abusive, and threatens the safety of her young son. Could Baker Dill just take him out on his boat and feed the guy to the sharks?
Dill can’t say no. Karen’s reappearance plunges Dill back into a life he thought he left behind, and rewrites everything he believed to be true about his new life on Plymouth Island. Serenity has twists and turns that would make M. Night Shyamalan proud. Before the day is done, Dill will have to confront everything he knows about right and wrong.

Hmmm. This movie was like watching paint dry, flimsy and lame concept/plot. Good, top notch actors doing weak acing. I hate to say this, I always try and usually do find the overall good in a most movies, but this one was just plain dumb. Very very thin. This would’ve been fine if it was an amazon or Netflix original. But for a studio release with big names? This movie gets a C-
We found the movie to be both interesting and towards the end you’re trying to figure out the twist. A lot of other reviews didn’t seem to like the twist but I give it create for being original. Some folks may need to think it all through when it’s said and done. But for all its originality I can’t really give it more than 3 stars. It doesn’t leave you on the edge of your seat but it’s ok. I do have to say the sex and nudity seem unnecessary—- especially after you realize the twist..
I can imagine and understand it receiving all kinds of passionate feedback, from intensely negative to downright infuriated, but I doubt anyone will claim it is boring.
Like a long fishing day without a bite, Serenity invites impatience rather than excited anticipation, and the eventual payoff provokes a big “huh?”
Serenity is a twist in search of a movie, a film noir in search of a purpose, and a great cast in search of better material.
