Atom User Reviews for Prospect
Great sci-fi character piece that was buoyed by compelling writing and performances.
Great story, that was not spoofed to you
I greatly appreciate original/non-serial sci-fi movies, especially since there are so few made. I’ve been waiting since Annihilation for a well made sci-fi movie - Prospect is that movie. The dialogue of Pedro Pascal’s rapscallion is worth watching the movie alone, but there’s so much more to enjoy; Sophie Thatcher’s nuanced performance of navigating an impossible situation as a child, the imperfectness of the retro tech needed to survive in a hostile world, the seamless melding of two disparate genres (western and sci-fi), the photography and the score all conspire to craft a cogent and compelling chronicle of life in “the green.”
can't wait to see it again!
Very low budget movie. Ok plot line but it's 2018 so where is all the cool technology that is available to bring this movie into the 21st century? Glad I paid a discounted ticket to see this bland movie.
Metacritic
Pascal and Thatcher are an outwardly compelling team, though they’re playing constructs instead of characters, hollow vehicles racing through this ragged future as opposed to convincingly long-term inhabitants of it.
The filmmakers brilliantly set-up an atmosphere that feels uniquely cinematic and wholly original. But when impressive world-building is established and story takes over, Prospect quickly devolves into a mess of contrivances and overstuffed characters in its more problematic second half.
Constructing character does not appear to be Earl and Caldwell’s strong suit (what’s satisfying about Cee owes almost entirely to Thatcher, a fresh face who tricks us into assuming she’s just a callow teen, when in fact, she proves to be the film’s toughest character). On the other hand, the duo show a real aptitude for world building.
