I got the impression watching this that Schrader considers it a bit baffling that he's revered as something of a politically-conscious and formally daring artist by a younger generation he's completely disconnected from in life experience and wants to set the record…

margauxSep 5, 2024Last night’s double-bill of Matt Farley movies must still be ringing in my head, because Paul Schrader’s latest reminded me a bit of Local Legends Bloodboth, both for its incredible and provocative resourcefulness (Scorsese spends $200 million de-aging his actors; Schrader…

Unable to tell if this movie is actually compelling or if Phosphorescent is very good at making music. The reality behind legend, reckoning with the ripples of our youth — it’s a surprisingly tender experience thanks to the Richard Gere performance, but its exploration is…
Joe AOct 12, 2023Wrapped OH CANADA tonight. I have not posted about it during filming because, although we had WGA and SAG waivers, there were rogue union members who sought to picket even legitimate productions and I had cast and crew members who did not want to be stigmatized by crossing…
Paul SchraderMay 17, 2024As someone who’s been extremely hit or miss on late era Schrader, I really dig “Oh Canada.” It beautifully captures the divide between myth and reality, legend and truth, idol and human. Schrader understands it’s the faults that make an artist, and Richard Gere is the…

Not sure what non-Schraderheads will get out of this, but I was quite taken by this new interpretation of “man and a journal.” The gulf between myth and reality, the haze of memory. Gentle, but also a brutally self-flagellating confessional.

Matt SingerJan 27, 2026Toys with the notion of lives based on legend or reality, a deconstruction of legacy as it draws to a close. Found it really interesting. Reflective in ways so obviously connected to Schrader himself. A self-analytical swan song. Big fan of both Gere & Elordi here.

i tend to expect a lot more than such one-note films from legendary genius paul schrader, but this is still an occasionally intelligent and engaging watch with great female performances. the writing and narrative could be better, but are serviceable given the topic

It’s no wonder why Schrader, an older artist whose life and career have been defined by a seemingly limitless series of controversies, took to bringing to the screen the story of Leonard Fife.
Oh, Canada is a more reflective work from Paul Schrader with plenty on its mind that still falls short of his best works.
It's a frequently fascinating and often moving film despite its many, often glaring, flaws.
