You can freeze this movie at any moment of its 139 minutes and see an image that tells a story. Danger on a dark street. A magnet sliding down a fridge. An open seat in a car. A ceiling fan. A cane poking a bare chest. A wooden cross tied to a truck scraping the pavement.…
Sean FennesseyJan 23, 2025Occasionally difficult to emotionally connect with due to the first person perspective, but equally difficult to deny how bold its storytelling style truly is. How the hell was this not in the conversation for Best Director, Editing, and Sound?!
James (Schaffrillas)Jan 3, 2025I don’t precisely know what I mean by this, but I don’t think this movie’s first person conceit is meant to capture the world as it is seen but rather the world as it is remembered, and I think it does that just about perfectly.

A leaf twirls through a pair of Black fingers. A deck of playing cards is bridged together in extreme close-up. A dry-cleaned suit hangs out the window of a parked car like it’s waiting for its body to come back. A boy named Elwood studies his reflection in his…
davidehrlichDec 16, 2024took me some time to settle into the style, but as soon as i did, i was engrossed until the end. the filmmaking has this ineffable hypnotic quality that commands you to live alongside the characters instead of simply passively watching the story unfold, and it’s impossible…
zoë rose bryantNov 7, 2024I’ll write more on this one later I think but it’s been exciting to watch a potentially important director discovering himself in real time; conceptually bold, emotionally rich, politically charged and not only confident enough to make an audience meet it on its own terms,…

davidehrlichDec 15, 2024A second viewing of this opens up RaMell Ross's camera and his decisions with it in ways that are just so thrilling, it kind of left me a little in awe. Take, for example, the brief glances Elwood has early on at women. Looking up from a comic book to gaze at a woman in the…

7.1 - I, in no way, want it to seem like this wasn’t powerful or moving, or well done. But I think I fall on the side of the stylistic choices coming off as potentially gimmicky, & overall somewhat distracting from the absolute gut wrenching emotional center of the story. The shifting POV (or…
The Nickel Boys follows two Black boys trapped in a brutal reform school in Jim Crow-era Florida, where they endure unspeakable cruelty and cling to hope for survival. Shot from a first-person POV, the film’s perspective makes its harrowing true story feel even more immersive and inescapable. The…

I think this movie was so cinematic and i loved how it was filmed never really seen anything like it. The story is so heartbreaking and eye opening i really enjoyed this film
I was deeply moved by the film's powerful and thought-provoking portrayal. Directed by RaMell Ross and starring Ethan Herisse and Brandon Wilson, this film's first-person point-of-view adds to its emotional impact. Rating 8.1/10 I gave this film a high rating due to its impactful storytelling,…
This was a hard watch but ended up being one of my favorites of the best picture nominees. This is an incredibly unique style, filming the entire movie in the first person as if you are the characters. The plot is interesting, and while hard to watch at times, flows very well and has a nice twist…

8.5/10 I’ve definitely never seen a movie shot like this, but it worked so well. The constant POV painted such an intimate picture of Elwood and Turner’s experiences. Paired with the sound design and editing, I can definitely see why this was nominated for Best Picture. Might be a little to…
Definitely a very good film with some strong filmmaking style but unfortunately the films style, while it is impressive, it still prevented me personally from connecting with the characters. I have respect for this film and its ambition, but I also don’t really like it personally

I was disappointed at the unnecessary cinematic technique overpowered the story.
Artsie and very non-sequential. Ruined a good story

Nickel Boys is a fragmented film, so much so that it can be difficult to grasp it. But at a certain point, it turns around and grabs you instead, refusing to let go until you're left sitting in a startling and stunned silence.
