My issues with the script are defeated by the excellent performance by Sonequa Martin-Green. Let’s make her a star. (Doesn’t hurt that Ed Harris is still one of our best too.)
Brian TallericoOct 6, 2024I’m about the last person who’s a fan of military propaganda or anything like it, but this one got me. Probably the most empathetic movie I’ve seen about veteran’s trauma and the fact that it’s grounded by the directors personal experience in combat really makes it…
Kellen GallagherFeb 16, 2025My Dead Friend Zoe’s ability to change its tone at the flip of a dime feels remarkable at times, especially with real gravity of understanding Natalie Morales and who exactly she was in her death, but it’s the performance of Sonequa Martin-Green that really sells how…
Movie Good or Movie Bad? - Mar 20, 2025
My brother and dad are both veterans, and while they've always faced their own struggles, I noticed a change in my brother when he returned. I was too young to fully understand the impact the military had on my dad, but I can see now how it affected him—and continues to. My…
Christian HaMar 9, 2024The same rigorous routine that Merit frames her day to day life post-active duty with is what My Dear Friend Zoe uses to depict its subject matter. The rhythm of this thing interweaves the present and the past into something that on gut reaction feels choppy, but on deeper…
claira curtisFeb 17, 2025A directorial debut that comes from the heart. I was surprised to find out early on that My Dead Friend Zoe, was inspired by co-writer/director Kyle Hausmann-Stokes’ experience as a vet that served in Iraq. A good film that tackles both PTSD and Alzheimer’s, this is one to…

definitely a slow burn but the ending had me in shambles 2025 Ranked
JoeleexFeb 28, 2025My Dead Friend Zoe is a good movie that makes a number of slight but important errors on its way to being a great movie. I think I understood the choices from a ticket sales standpoint, but not from an honest, earnest, real talk standpoint. It's unfortunate... but its a…
Joel HilkeFeb 17, 2025Solid even if it’s kind of a mess. Think the movies main problem is it’s tone. Treats some things that are funny as deadly serious and others that are deadly serious as funny. It’s all very well performed though and occasionally pretty moving. Just not really my thing.

Went in mostly blind, it was a bit slow but I liked it, it was described as a dark comedy drama, I think the COMEDY aspect is definitely a stretch, it has SOME humor but its really much more a drama, went in an unexpected direction then I initially expected

This movie takes a poignant look at PTSD and grief and does a really good job at showing the difficulties of dealing with both. The acting is great and the relationships between the characters are both endearing and relatable.
Really sad and good but when I watched the thing I thought it was gonna be a bit more light so I don’t really think I was in the mood

Really enjoyed this one and its story. The themes were powerful and the performances were great
A scattershot Dramedy that playfully faces the traumatic guilt that so many veterans have.

JHJohn HartelWhat an absolute fantastic film. I will be shocked if Sonequa Martin-Green doesn't get Oscar consideration.
