Synopsis

Fathom Events and GKIDS partner Studio Ponoc to bring Modest Heroes, an ambitious anthology of three thrilling tales created by some of the greatest talents working in Japanese animation today, to cinemas this December. Together, the stories (Kanini & Kanino, Life Ain’t Gonna Lose, Invisible) explore ideas of heroism in everyday life, and the infinite potential of the short film format allows the directors and Studio Ponoc to experiment with breathtaking, action-packed visuals, concise human drama, and gorgeous fantasy worlds in this unforgettable showcase that is further demonstration of the studio’s exciting future. Featuring the voice of Maggie Q (Designated Survivor, Divergent). Studio Ponoc, founded by two-time Academy Award®-nominee Yoshiaki Nishimura (The Tale of The Princess Kaguya, When Marnie Was There) and featuring many artists from the venerable Studio Ghibli, made an immediate splash with their acclaimed debut film Mary and The Witch’s Flower last year.

I was surprised by how much I enjoyed these short films! Each film left me wanting more, but it was sort of fitting with the theme of "Modest Heroes." I also appreciate that they tried to present stories that kids could see themselves in. The first and last are more fantastical, but the second is very down-to-earth. Food allergies are becoming very common and I know if I had a food allergy and saw this as a kid it would have sparked a lot of hope. --The behind the scenes commentary was also great! From the little bit they shared, this studio is committed to creating meaningful and inspiring content for kids. We need more of this!

Why. Animation was great. Story was bad. Time was not what it was advertised. It said one hour and fifteen and that's because of the 30 minute interview with the director about why it is so short. Every story was okay except none of the stories had any point to them.
