Put this on for Winona Ryder & Christina Ricci, and now I'm starting to like Cher as well. A cute coming-of-age film can be a weakness of mine, but the cast overall was great. They didn't need to make it 15 and 26 years old weird, but I guess that's how it was in the 1960s.
Brenda M. likedMermaidsClassic Winona and Cher with baby Christina Ricci and the lovable Bob Hoskins. Worthy mention of 16 Candles heartthrob Jake Ryan AKA Michael Schoeffling. Coming of age story of “Jewish” teen wanting to be Catholic in early 1960s. Cher & Hoskins have great chemistry.
Brook likedMermaidsCute movie with an iconic cast! Cher, Winona Ryder and little Christina Ricci as one family?? Loved it. Cher is actually an underrated actress, she was great. And of course Bob Hoskins was my favorite as Lou. It was a bit predictable but a good watch nonetheless.

Pretty good movie, performances were great and the plot was oddly unique. Bob Hoskins was great, though there’s this one scene where his accent slips. Hated Joe only because he was given no personality but maybe there was a reason for that…

Jay likedMermaidsIt really is just all over the place. It’s crazy, but it’s funny. Cher is iconic and the ending was really sweet. Also who let the main love interest of Charlotte be that much older it was gross.

Frankly, Mermaids is the kind of movie that needs the strong personalities of Cher and Ryder, and is lucky it has them. They put the movie over. It has a weak script, and the direction by Richard Benjamin - who had two predecessors on this project - is so reticent as to be almost absent. There's almost no pacing or shaping to speak of. Cher plays a footloose, life-loving mother of two fatherless daughters who sports a bouffant hairdo and, at one crucial point, a Mylar mermaid costume that looks as if it were constructed, on a bet by designer Bob Mackie, entirely out of common household objects. The part isn't much of a stretch for America's reigning queen of wacky non-conformity, though it should please her established fans while scraping the nerves of the unconvinced as lightly as possible.
