Synopsis

At the Barba Azul cabaret in Mexico City, The women dance and drink with the men who can afford it. In the upstairs toilets, "Mami", in exchange for a trip looks after their bags and even tries to support them.

Herrero Garvin and company have evidently earned the trust of Dona Olga and her customers, their film winningly emerging as warm, humanistic evocation of sisterhood against a fascinating demi-monde backdrop.

Amid its textured, occasionally conflict-scarred portrait of female community, La Mami is rife with sharp, tacit socioeconomic criticism of an unequal, patriarchal society in which making joyless business out of pleasure is the best hope many women have.
