Synopsis

Hannah and her non-binary teenager Frances visit her gay grandfather Jimpa in Amsterdam. Frances expresses a desire to stay with their grandfather for a year, challenging Hannah's parenting beliefs and forcing her to confront past issues.
Moviegoers are saying
JIMPA presents a deeply personal LGBTQ family story that splits audiences down the middle, with viewers either finding it genuinely moving or uncomfortably awkward. While Olivia Colman, John Lithgow, and newcomer Aud Mason-Hyde deliver compelling performances across three generations, the film's intimate family dynamics - including controversial bathing scenes between mother and teenage child - leave many viewers feeling unsettled rather than touched.

Jimpa’s exploration of non-binary identity ultimately proves superficial.

Jimpa is a heartfelt tribute that unfortunately doesn't resonate as much as it should.

If Jimpa itself pushes us away, Colman tries to keeps us close, a warm and astute performance of raw, red-eyed emotion remaining entirely real until the end. If only we could have joined her there.
