Movie Info & Cast

Hal Ashby is one of the forgotten luminaries of Hollywood. In the 1970s he directed a remarkable string of acclaimed, award winning films including Harold and Maude, Shampoo and Coming Home. But in the 1980s his career was marked by just enough flops and clashes with the studios that his legacy was tarnished. In her feature-length directorial debut, Amy Scott pieces together an illuminating and personal portrait of the groundbreaking artist through archival materials, personal letters, and interviews with his colleagues, revealing his uncompromising yet compassionate spirit – and a fresh appreciation for his overlooked contributions to cinema.

Hal is a loving tribute to a filmmaker who rarely gets the attention he deserves.

Hal entertainingly reminds us, his influence as a righteous, challenging, humanist chronicler of mortal foibles — and as a filmmaker on a quest for a greater understanding of our world — remains a force among today’s more conscientious directors.
