Synopsis

Hal Ashby is one of the forgotten luminaries of Hollywood. In the 1970s he directed a remarkable string of acclaimed, award winning films including Harold and Maude, Shampoo and Coming Home. But in the 1980s his career was marked by just enough flops and clashes with the studios that his legacy was tarnished. In her feature-length directorial debut, Amy Scott pieces together an illuminating and personal portrait of the groundbreaking artist through archival materials, personal letters, and interviews with his colleagues, revealing his uncompromising yet compassionate spirit – and a fresh appreciation for his overlooked contributions to cinema.

Hal is a soft-edged memorial that should direct you, or re-direct you, to some terrific and tough-edged films.

Hal gives us a lot to take in, whether you’re an aficionado or new to Ashby’s work. Scott has done movie fans a real service. She’s finally given an under-sung filmmaking giant his well-deserved close-up at long last.

Amy Scott’s affectionate and smart documentary sheds light on an artist obsessed with addressing the injustice and intolerance in this country, but who himself could be the most problematic of men.
