Synopsis

In 1917, outside the parish of Fátima, Portugal, a 10-year-old girl and her two younger cousins witness multiple visitations of the Virgin Mary, who tells them that only prayer and suffering will bring an end to World War I. As secularist government officials and Church leaders try to force the children to recant their story, word of the sighting spreads across the country, inspiring religious pilgrims to flock to the site in hopes of witnessing a miracle. What they experience will transform their quiet lives and bring the attention of a world yearning for peace. Based on real-life events and starring Joaquim de Almeida, Goran Visnjic, Stephanie Gil and Lúcia Moniz , with Sônia Braga and Harvey Keitel Fatima is an uplifting story about the power of faith.

Fatima is definitely a must-see movie. I appreciated the presentation of the apparitions from Sr. Lucia’s words and not Hollywood’s imaginary storytelling. The children’s spiritual innocence is well presented. I only wish there could’ve been more on the apparitions, the miracles, and (especially) the miracle of the sun and afterwards. Thoroughly thought provoking on one’s faith!

Fatima is told simply but emotionally, prioritizing the sensorial reality of the children's world and the people inhabiting it. This devotion to the real makes the holy vision palpable and plausible.

While not especially artful, Fatima honors those who stand by their convictions. That its role models are children makes the message all the more remarkable.

I also appreciated the film’s quick glimpse of Hell itself, which Lucia is plunged into as a warning to whose who won’t accept salvation. With its cheap CGI demons and soundtrack of wailing souls, it was unintentional comedy of the highest order. If you need me, I’ll be laughing all the way to Hades.
