  • The movie is a reimagining of Fantasy Island (1977) in a horror genre, inspired by The Cabin in the Woods (2011) and Westworld (2016).
  • It was announced in July 2018 that a reimagining of the television series Fantasy Island was being developed at Blumhouse Productions and Sony Pictures.
  • Principal photography on the film began in January 2019 in Fiji.
  • In October 2018, Michael Peña, Jimmy O. Yang, Dave Bautista and Lucy Hale joined the cast. In November 2018, during an interview, Jeff Wadlow disclosed that Maggie Q, Portia Doubleday and Ryan Hansen had joined the cast, as well as suggesting Bautista may no longer be able to appear in the film.
  • Jason Blum wanted Nicolas Cage to play Mr. Roarke but Cage passed on the role.
  • Second movie of 2020 to have both Jimmy O. Yang and Ryan Hansen, after Like a Boss (2020). In both movies they had a partnership. They played brothers in this movie, and business partners in Like a Boss (2020).
  • This movie was shot on the island of Fiji. Parisa Fitz-Henley (Julia) played a character named Fiji Cavanaugh on the series Midnight, Texas (2017). In the books upon which that series was based, the character was named after the location in which she was conceived, the island of Fiji.
  • When Sloane's husband is watching tv, he's watching the Miami Hurricanes vs. Florida Gators football game.
  • Both Michael Peña (Roarke) & Michael Rooker (Damon) have both played roles in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU): Pena in Ant-Man (2015) & Ant-Man and the Wasp (2018); Rooker in Guardians of the Galaxy (2014) & Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (2017).


  • Brax's nickname Tattoo is a reference to Tattoo from Fantasy Island (1977), the sidekick of the original Mister Roarke.
  • The last line of the film - "Welcome to Fantasy Island" - is the first line generally heard in Fantasy Island (1977) when Mister Roark welcomes guests.
