Synopsis

Depicts 8-year-old Bobo's life on her family's Rhodesian farm during the Bush War's final stages. It explores the family's bond with Africa's land and the war's impact on the region and individuals through Bobo's perspective.
Moviegoers are saying
Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight divides audiences with its unflinching portrayal of 1980 Rhodesia through a white child's eyes, earning praise for Lexi Venter's exceptional child performance and Embeth Davidtz's bold directorial debut, while facing intense criticism for its problematic perspective on colonialism and revolution. The film's atmospheric cinematography and compelling lead performance can't overcome what many reviewers see as a fundamental failure to properly address the horrors of white supremacy and colonialism.

Precisely the sort of intelligent, human-scale adult drama audiences insist no one makes anymore.

The bones of this memory play are familiar, but Davidtz is a natural filmmaker, and the sense of a tattered but privileged world teetering on extinction is visualized with fresh and evocative details.

The grand takeaway is Venter’s astonishing turn. That kid’s got a future, and it began with a filmmaker who knew how to direct her: with patient energy while also encouraging the freedom to play and seek and explore as Bobo does within her little big world.
