Synopsis
Set against the sun-bleached grit of Los Angeles, Crime 101 weaves the tale of an elusive jewel thief (Chris Hemsworth) whose string of heists along the 101 freeway have mystified police. When he eyes the score of a lifetime, his path crosses that of a disillusioned insurance broker (Halle Berry) who is facing her own crossroads. Convinced he has found a pattern, a relentless detective (Mark Ruffalo) is closing in, raising the stakes even higher. As the heist approaches, the line between hunter and hunted begins to blur, and all three are faced with life-defining choices–and the realization that there can be no turning back.

Boring people will call it a less good Heat dupe, but I think LA is big enough for many movies about master thieves struggling to navigate their personal and professional lives. Sleek looking picture, adored the use of reflections, the camera mounted to car doors, the…
Joe AFeb 11, 2026This is so obviously made as a Heat copycat that I wish I disliked it so I could dismissively call it Reheated. The problem is I actually liked this. So I cannot call it that. However, I write a Letterboxd review where I make this joke. I have no problem with that…
Matt SingerFeb 9, 2026Basically everyone in this movie is at their sexiest. Yes, even worn-down cop Mark Ruffalo…. Maybe especially worn-down cop Mark Ruffalo. The type of high-intensity, lavishly-stylized, LA crime thriller that I could watch a million versions of and always be stoked for…

the barry keoghan weird little guy cinematic universe continues to grow
cobFeb 10, 2026Genuinely impressive that something this derivative thought it would be a good idea to cut out all the fun parts. Apparently nobody was paying attention in class!
matt lynchFeb 2, 2026glad such a benevolent cuss exists and is even pushed by a bigger studio: a homage to the 70s/80s post noir cop/crime busters. Hemsworth is relatable as autistic criminal with a heart, Ruffalo ruffles his feathers as usual, Monica Barbaro is adorable & relatable - and hey…

Once again, Barry Keoghan is rejected for a kiss by a tall, handsome Australian
Starstruck780Feb 9, 2026missed the first 20 or so mins so I’ll definitely need to rewatch but it’s nice to see what storm, hulk, thor & druig have been up to (living lives of crime)
joeFeb 9, 2026Chris Hemsworth was mid heistgooning and jewelmaxxing when a patternmaxxed detectoid policecel Mark Ruffalo forensicmogged his heist with goated pattern recognition and crimecel Barry Keoghan feralpilled gremlinmaxxed the whole operation into a containmentbreachoid…

too many big actors, had to give them all screen time. plots so unnecessary, wasted so much time. halle berry served little to no purpose for plot besides maybe girl boss moment. this could have been an email.
overall not bad. this movie def as the sauce stylistically, (beautifully shot and looks amazing) but everything else kinda was just decent for me. no performance stood out very much to me and the ending just left a weird taste in my mouth.

Just your standard run of the mill heist film. It’s a very slow burn for not a lot of pay off. However the cinematography is pretty good throughout
8/10 Cinema viewing in IMAX, none of the film in IMAX format however 🤔 Great watch, didn’t go in with any expectations, would recommend a watch

Whereas Michael Mann gave Heat the perfect narrative offramp, Crime 101 tends to circle the block toward the end.
This is a purposefully languid movie that proves real, genuine tension can be built without crash landing right on your head. In an era of fast cuts and escalating explosions — the kind that Hemsworth, Ruffalo and Halle Berry all know intimately from their time in Marvel's universe — it is refreshing to watch something this confident in its own particular DNA.
That Crime 101 comes close to greatness and never quite gets there is not a crime. Even if it was, it’d be a misdemeanor.
