This is the greatest sci-fi masterpiece since Star Wars or the Final Cut of the original Blade Runner. The film is incredible and stands on its own. It has a soul and an amazing theme/meaning behind.

An sequel I was afraid might be an unworthy follow-up to the original visionary masterpiece turns out to be both beautifully consistent with its predecessor and a film that stands on its own.

Is it a perfect movie? Not quite. The middle section drags a bit through no fault of the excellent performances, but ultimately it’s all of a piece, and the mid-mark pacing turns out to be a relatively minor quibble.

So swollen with purpose, so titanically self-conscious in its mythmaking, that at times its nearly paralyzes itself with solemnity.

Blade Runner 2049 is long and slow. It’s never boring, but it’s a little too mired in one sustained note of sadness to break out as a great experience or to stand out as a great movie. Still, there are some remarkable scenes.
