maybe the real slasher was the misogyny we made along the way

cateDec 20, 2019One of my personal favorite slashers. Love the frequently moody wide-angle compositions, patient camera moves (and zooms!), artificial glow of the Christmas lights, and quaint lived-in hangout quality to its performances (actually quite funny with a crowd!) that really…
Josh LewisDec 8, 2020i went in a expecting a fun, campy, christmas time slasher and instead got one of the most bone chilling horror films i've seen in ages. not because of the actual murders themselves, but because of the abuse, control, and manipulation the characters undergo - something too…

now how am i supposed to go to sleep after THIS 😭
LucyOct 9, 2023every time i rewatch this, i’m taken aback by how effectively it avoids exploitation despite being centered around a serial killer of women and how easy it would be to fall in that trap, especially with a male director and male writer. it doesn’t take much to imagine a…

Before Halloween, there was Black Christmas. The ORIGINAL slasher flick. The ORIGINAL “the call is coming from inside the house” horror masterpiece. Diehard horror fiends hold this in high regard and for good reason. This is an mandatory xmas time viewing for me.
I can’t believe how terrifying this is. Not even jumpscare scary, but dramatic irony-every camera movement instills dread-I wish I could jump out my skin-jesus f-ing christ-I need to check my entire house three times over-my knees are aching-…… scary… wow…

What makes this one my favourite slasher, is that the enigmatic murderer remains mysterious untill the end. Despite police catching someone, we can't be sure if the killer is not out. We don't even know if the final girl is still alive, which leaves large room for interpretation.
Oh yeah this movie rips. I love how it focuses less on jumpscares and gore and instead focuses on suspense, and disturbing imagery and audio, which makes it feel scarily real. The ending is great and one of my favourite moments are the phone calls very unnerving and uncomfortabl
Loved loved the ending 🔥🔥. I swear I played it in my head just before it happened and thought how it would be a perfect way to end things. THE PHONE RINGING, him still being in the house, unknown, how he'll probably kill again & again, the credits. Kinda proud of myself 🤓. 3/5

8.2 I thought this movie was very interesting with a uniquely disturbing killer. I could rate this higher, but I don’t think the film really builds enough of an attachment with the characters. I thought the ambiguity in the ending of the movie and the twist was great
This holiday slasher is extremely effective in its building of tension and use of clever cinematography to scare audiences. I need to stop watching the home invasion movies before bed because this one has me checking every closet and corner twice just to be sure

Not only does Black Christmas provide real chills, it introduces devices - like the opening, which is shot from the slasher's point of view - that inspired John Carpenter's Halloween and countless genre flicks to follow. [20 Dec 2009, p.61]
