  • The lead role was offered to Chris Hemsworth, but he passed on the role, due to scheduling issues. Then, it came up that the producers invited Gustavo Goulart to perform the lead role (Mitch Rapp), but this rumor was never confirmed.
  • Bruce Willis was attached to play Stan Hurley, the mentor of Mitch Rapp.
  • American Assassin is the 11th book in Vince Flynn's series, but the first book in chronological order.

  • Michael Keaton was initially apprehensive about playing Stan Hurley, who is portrayed as a somewhat crazy, former CIA operative. Keaton did not like the idea originally, due to Keaton's well known liberal views. However, after reading Vince Flynn's novel American Assassin, Keaton felt like he could connect with and channel the character of Hurley.
  • It is coincidental that military carriers are shown in this movie considering Taylor Kitsch, (Ghost), starred in the movie Battleship.


  • In the books, Mitch Rapp's girlfriend was killed in the Pan Am flight that was blown up by a terrorist over Lockerbie, Scotland on 21 December 1988, a historical event. In the movie she is gunned down on the beach of Ibiza, Spain.
  • The Navy ship near the end of the movie is called the U.S.S. Flynn, named after Vince Flynn, creator of the Mitch Rapp character.
  • When the last water flushes away from the carrier deck after the explosion, there is a F-35 in the center of the screen. This plane has grey-scale roundels of the Royal Netherlands Air Force on the side of the fuselage. In fact, the RNLAF does have F-35s, they are not equipped to land on or take-off from aircraft carriers. Unless they hoisted the plane on deck, it's impossible for the plane to be there.
  • According to Ghost, everything within a five mile radius of the detonation would be pulled into the explosion, however the UH-1 helicopter used to rescue Mitch from the detonation site is able to escape this fate. The detonator was set to go off in thirty seconds after Mitch was picked up. Thus, in order to escape the blast, the helicopter would have to travel at a speed of 600 miles per hour which far exceeds the UH-1's top speed of 135 miles per hour.
