Was expecting a fantastic comedy with ghosts haunting vacuum cleaners in Thailand being a metaphor for queer relationships, and I got that but it was also a criticism of capitalism and how it erases history, how assimilation requires you to step on other people, how…
augustemarsJun 6, 2025I wish this was tighter, but you have to give leeway to new visions. And this is a very new vision: a mostly deadpan comedic Thai film about ghosts that possess appliances that somehow manages to also be a deeply felt political statement about the lack of accountability for…

walked outside to a guy smoking crack in fed square, but I had already watched this movie so I didn't need any.
ariFeb 4, 2026I can’t believe Quentin Dupieux isn’t involved in this film. This is like a Thai equivalent. But a long version and this makes a difference. I wished it were also that essentially tight. The slow pacing is even more recognizable in the second half. There is also a…

Ratchapoom Boonbunchachoke’s defense of historical memory couldn’t be more timely.
Underneath its story of the sudden animation of household products is a layered critique of late-stage capitalism, a plea for the humanity of queer folks, a rebuke of the erasure of history and of memory, and a challenge against traditionalism which holds back a people from necessarily breaking free, to the next stage of life.
A Useful Ghost should first and foremost be enjoyed as the mainstream accessible entertainment it is meant to be, let not its festival trappings deceive you. It will admittedly be a curiosity for Western audiences, but once in tune with its peculiar and particular modes of storytelling, they will find plenty to enjoy and unpack.
