Synopsis

Based on the award-winning book, A Chance in the World is the unbelievably true story of Steve Pemberton, a wounded and broken boy destined to become a man of resilience and vision. From the day he is five years old and dropped off at his foster home of the next eleven years, Steve (Terrell Ransom Jr.) is mentally and physically tortured by Betty (Kelly Owens/his foster mother), Willie (Lawrence-Hilton Jacobs/ her husband) and his foster siblings. Desperate for a sense of family and belonging, Steve searches for his biological parents, but no one in the system can help him. Eventually, through the help of his high-school teacher John Sykes (Tom Sizemore) and his love of literature, Steve finds that family isn’t just a biological function, it’s a choice based in love. This special event comes to cinemas nationwide on Wednesday, May 30 only, including an exclusive panel discussion broadcast live from the Paley Center in New York City with Steve Pemberton and other adoption advocates.

Loved the story of Steve’s painful journey / positive outcome. I brought two young girls (family) who have been in the system. Wished they could have actually seen more of his successes. Thank you for sharing this story.

I truly don't know where to begin as I left mixed with so many emotions. To give the take aways would be spoiler alerts - "Adversity" is your training ground for life. Steve's story reiterates that why you don't think you get to choose your family - you actually do and it's about reshaping how you define family. The movie also help to drive home that every interaction in life is important - no matter how insignificant you might feel that it is - it has the ability to change the arc of a life! Encore please!
