Wonderful story told in a way I’ve never experienced before. One of the best movies I’ve ever seen.

This is one of those films, not a movie, a film, that must be seen in the movie theater. It is so expertly crafted and well made, it’s breathtaking in it’s execution. 1917 is one of the most beautifully shot and haunting war films I have ever seen and is a harrowing film. The story is so simple but is so epic and the director Sam Mendes and Roger Deakins the cinematographer should be given tons of awards for this tremendous achievement in film. Everyone needs to run out and see this movie now!!

War is much on the minds of people right now, and 1917 is a good reminder, flaws and all, of what that really entails. The contradiction, of course, is that it is not one long slog through gorgeous sunsets, but a million little moments that make up the effort. That’s kind of the movie Mendes made, and yet it’s not. You want to feel a movie like this, but too often you simply appreciate it.

The film is a genre entertainment and, like all such beasts, it honours certain conventions and allows certain compromises.

As 1917 goes on and the pair face a series of logistical challenges (navigating a collapsing bunker, crossing a bombed-out bridge), the film’s form begins to resemble that of a video game—only without the user interaction that makes games so compelling.
