Highlight Reel: The Most Exciting Movies Arriving June 2018

By Tori Preston

The summer movie season is under way, which means there’s no shortage of options when it comes time to enjoy some big screen spectacle (with a side of free air conditioning). You can check out an overview of all the May and June movies we love, but we really wanted to tell you a bit more about a few of these. Whether you’re flying solo, out with the kids, or on a group hang, there’s bound to be a perfect fit for your every whim.

Get a Jump on June with Solo: A Star Wars Story

Sure, this movie comes out a little before June, but we can't start our summer guide without talking about the latest Star Wars flick, right? You know the drill - a young Han Solo, a young Chewie, and a smoldering charmisma young Lando. There's a heist and a pretty new Millenium Falcon. Spaces heists! Oh, and did we mention that young Lando (Donald Glover)? Yeah....

Girls Night Out? Don’t Miss Ocean’s 8

Nothing says summer fun like a good, slick heist flick. And nothing says “slick heist flick” like a new entry in the Ocean’s Eleven franchise. This film follows another branch of the Ocean family tree, with Danny’s sister Debbie (Sandra Bullock) forming her own crew of talented and diverse criminals to help her pull off a glitzy con at the annual Met Gala. But what really has us excited is that aforementioned crew, because joining Bullock on the job is Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, Sarah Paulson, Mindy Kaling, Rihanna, and Awkwafina. That’s a lot of talented female headliners all in the same place, and we are HERE for it.

Take Your Young Friends To See Some Old Pals In Incredibles 2

Can you believe it’s been 14 years since we last witnessed the super-adventures of the incredible Parr family? But thanks to the wonders of animation, they’ve barely aged! As for the rest of us… eh, let’s not talk about it. Creator Brad Bird checks back in on the domestic trials and tribulations of Helen, (a.k.a. Elastigirl) and Bob (Mr. Incredible) as they continue to raise their gifted kids Violet, Dash, and baby Jack-Jack. While Helen is working to bring Supers back into the mainstream, Bob is at home contending with homework, teen angst, and Jack-Jack’s extraordinary, emerging new powers. Holly Hunter and Craig T. Nelson are back as the voices of Elastigirl and Mr. Incredible, with Samuel L. Jackson as their friend Frozone. Bob Odenkirk, Jonathan Banks, Catherine Keener, John Ratzenberger, and Sophia Bush also lend their vocal talents. And of course Brad Bird himself returns as the inimitable Edna Mode.

Horror To Watch With Mom (Or Not): Hereditary

We’ve been anticipating this buzzy festival favorite since it premiered to killer reviews at the 2018 Sundance Film Festival. But we’ve also been avoiding spoilers, so all we know is that a) it’s scary AF, and b) Toni Collette is continuing her streak of being wonderful in very scary movies (and in everything else she appears in, always). In Hereditary, Collette plays Annie, a woman trying to unravel the terrifying secrets of her ancestry after her difficult mother passes away. Only her mother may not be as departed as Annie might believe – and her influence may be looming over Annie’s own children. Gabriel Byrne, Alex Wolff and Milly Shapiro also star. CAN’T. WAIT.

Looking For A Little Action? Then Check Into Hotel Artemis

Some movies seem to drop into our lives out of nowhere, and in the span of a single trailer go from “Huh?” to “Oh hell yes!” in our esteem. Such is the case of Hotel Artemis. To be fair, this movie has a promising enough premise: The Nurse (Jodie Foster) runs a secret members-only ER exclusively for criminals, and inevitably all hell breaks loose when the facility finds itself under siege from… well, criminals. But it’s the cast that really elevates this one on our “gotta watch” list: joining Foster are Sterling K. Brown, Sofia Boutella, Brian Tyree Henry, Jenny Slate, Zachary Quinto, Charlie Day (sporting an INCREDIBLE mustache), and Dave Bautista. Oh, and so is Jeff Goldblum. Which is how you know it’s gonna be a fun time.

And Now For Something Completely Different: American Animals

American Animals is a fascinating, hard to define film. It tells the true story of 4 college students (played by Evan Peters, Barry Keoghan, Blake Jenner, and Jared Abrahamson) who decide to steal millions of dollars worth of rare books from their college library. If you aren’t already familiar with the case you can always Google it, but we’d recommend going in blind and letting the film guide you if you can. At times it plays like the sort of glossy heist flick that inspired the boys, but then it mixes in a heavy dose of true crime documentary. Interview footage with the real-life culprits is used to help shape the impact of the narrative, which questions the nature of memory, friendship, trust, and responsibility.
