Highlight Reel: The Most Exciting Movies Arriving July 2018

By Tori Preston

Look, we know what you’ll be watching on the 4th of July: those big, bright fireworks bursting up in the sky. But that’s only one night out of the month covered! Luckily the rest of July is chock-full of exciting new movies to keep you equally entertained, from explosive summer blockbusters to sparkling indie gems. Here are our must-see recommendations, no matter what mood you’re in...

A Buzzy Blockbuster At Any Size: Ant-Man and the Wasp

There’s no denying that Avengers: Infinity War was a bit of a downer, especially there at the end. *snap* But luckily Marvel planned ahead and scheduled this tiny-yet-mighty adventure as a follow-up, to wipe that depressing, existence-ending dust from your eyes. Paul Rudd returns as Scott Lang – still a hero, still a (reluctant) criminal, still a father. Only this time around he’s got a partner in Evangeline Lilly’s Hope Van Dyne, who will be donning her own size-changing suit as the Wasp. Yes, the MCU is adding a new female superhero to their ranks ahead of next year’s Captain Marvel! In addition to returning characters like Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) and Luis (Michael Peña), the movie also sports some exciting newcomers like Michelle Pfeiffer as the long-lost Janet Van Dyne; Hannah John-Kamen as Ghost; Randall Park as Jimmy Woo; and Laurence Fishburne as Dr. Bill Foster (who may also know a thing or two about changing sizes…).

Made By Friends, For Friends: Blindspotting

Working with friends is hard. Heck, sometimes working with co-workers is hard! And yet longtime friends and collaborators Daveed Diggs and Rafael Casal pulled it off spectacularly with this film, which they co-wrote and starred in together. Set in a rapidly gentrifying Oakland, Diggs plays Collin, a man trying to make it out of his last three days of probation unscathed while working with his troublemaking childhood friend, Miles (Casal). And then Collin witnesses a police shooting while trying to make his curfew, and the film reveals the depths of its purpose. Real and raw, funny yet deadly serious, Blindspotting is carefully crafted to resemble the world we all live in – but a world that looks very different based on the color of your skin.

Summer Secrets, Stunts & Spies: Mission: Impossible – Fallout

Sure, this may be the sixth installment in the M:I franchise, but that doesn’t mean the team is coasting on their previous success. Instead, writer/director Christopher McQuarrie, who previously helmed 2015’s Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation, has put together another thrilling flick full of death-defying stunts, heart-stopping chases… and yes, the threat of global catastrophe. Naturally. Tom Cruise returns as secret agent extraordinaire Ethan Hunt, and he too is taking the gig as seriously as ever – right down to that infamous broken ankle he suffered during a stunt jump! Familiar faces like Rebecca Ferguson, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Michelle Monaghan, and Alec Baldwin return, joined this time around by newcomers including Angela Bassett, Vanessa Kirby, Henry Cavill… and Henry Cavill’s famous CGI-defying mustache.

The Lighter Side Of DC: Teen Titans GO! To The Movies

Finally: a DC superhero movie that absolutely nobody will think is too dark or brooding! This big screen take on the silly & satirical Cartoon Network hit series is about… well, the plucky Teen Titans trying to get in on this whole superhero boom and land their own Hollywood movie. Just like this one! It’s very meta, in typical Teen Titans GO! style. But unfortunately for Robin, Beast Boy, Starfire, Raven and Cyborg, their Tinsel Town adventure runs into a snag… in the form of a villain named Slade (Will Arnett). In addition to the original voice talent from the series, the film adds some serious star power to the cast, including Nicolas Cage as Superman, Jimmy Kimmel as Batman, Lil Yachty as Green Lantern, Halsey as Wonder Woman, and Kristin Bell as a new character named Jade.

And Now For Something Completely Different: Sorry To Bother You

One of the buzziest films to make the festival circuit this year, Sorry To Bother You is the debut feature from musician Boots Riley… and it’s almost impossible to describe. The film is political and personal, real yet surreal, hilarious and disturbing and absurd and like nothing you’ve ever seen before. It all begins when a young black man named Cassius Green (Lakeith Stanfield) lands a job as a telemarketer – only to learn that success depends on perfecting a “white voice.” From this basic premise, the film riotously expands in surprising directions to encompass art, romance, resistance, revolution, disenfranchisement, and even mutation. But honestly, the cast alone is reason enough to check this one out: Stanfield is joined by Tessa Thompson, Armie Hammer, Terry Crews, Steven Yeun, Danny Glover, Jermaine Fowler, Omari Hardwick, and the voices of David Cross and Patton Oswalt as… well, “white voices.”
