If there’s anything better than the director of Thor: Ragnarok making a new Flash Gordon movie, we don’t wanna know about it.

Taika Waititi is attached to help “crack” an animated Flash Gordon movie for Fox/Disney, Deadline exclusively reported Monday. The inventive and hilarious filmmaker’s camp says it is too early to tell if he will direct the film, but Waititi is reportedly signing on as both writer and director. He’s currently in post on his much-anticipated Jojo Rabbit, a satire based on the novel by Christine Leunens about a young boy in Hitler’s army that finds out his mother (Scarlett Johansson) is hiding a Jewish girl from the Nazis.

The last time Flash Gordon was on the big screen was in the 1980 cult-fave starring Sam Jones as the titular hero. But the movie’s big draw was — and still is — that a-mah-zing theme song and soundtrack by Queen. Check it out below:

Since then, the property has been put through Development Hell. Julius Avery, the director of 2018’s horror movie Overlord from Bad Robot, was the most recent filmmaker attached to update the hero. Before him, Matthew Vaughn (KingsmanX-Men: First Class) was spearheading an update.

Those projects were live-action movies, and an animated take on the pulp hero could be a very refreshing and clever way to give that character and his world a franchise-friendly upgrade. Thor: Ragnarok was basically a dry run, tonally, for the property and we can’t wait to see how it all pans out.

Please, movie gods, cast Chris Hemsworth as Flash.
