Break out your leather duster coats and start deciding if you lean red or blue pill, folks, because it looks like we’re getting a fourth Matrix movie.

Yep, you read that correctly.

Variety has reported that Matrix 4 is coming our way, with a portion of the original players on board to return. Keanu Reeves will reprise his role of Neo and Carrie-Ann Moss will be back as Trinity. Lana Wachowski will write and direct the fourth film, this time without her co-directing sibling Lilly Wachowski. David Mitchell and Aleksandar Hemon are also helping write the script.

Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow will be co-producing the project, with WB’s Toby Emmerich saying Warner Bros. “could not be more excited” about it. “Lana is a true visionary — a singular and original creative filmmaker — and we are thrilled that she is writing, directing and producing this new chapter in ‘The Matrix’ universe.”

At the time, the story details or direction of the plot is unknown. Also unknown is whether or not Laurence Fishburne will return in the role of Morbius, or whether the role will be recast or written out altogether. Whatever the story is, it seems Wachowski has been thinking about them for years. “Many of the ideas Lilly and I explored 20 years ago about our reality are even more relevant now,” she said. “I’m very happy to have these characters back in my life and grateful for another chance to work with my brilliant friends.”

It’s not as if Warner Bros. hasn’t been trying to get a Matrix universe off the ground for years. It’s just been tied up with producing rights legal battles. It’s a gamble now whether or not it will be as successful as it was in the past. On one hand, Keanu Reeves has literally never been bigger thanks to the John Wick franchise and other projects. And The Matrix was a groundbreaking, strong IP with a devoted cult following when the first movie came out 20 years ago.

But the subsequent sequels rated lower and lower with audiences and the third movie, The Matrix Revolutions, got eviscerated by critics. That then-final film came out a full 16 years ago. Will enough time have passed for the bitter taste of the sequels to be washed out of audiences’ mouths? Will they still care? Lana and Lilly Wachowski have proven to be visionary filmmakers whose projects are wildly hit-or-miss. When the Wachowskis – or in this case, Lana alone – can harness their huge ideas, they make magic. When they can’t, you get…well, you get the hot mess of Jupiter Ascending. Let’s hope this is one of those times Wachowski’s grand vision is realized.

No word yet on a release date, but we’ll let you know as soon as we do.
