Let’s be real. Women don’t usually get a lot to do in action movies when they’re not the leads. That’s why, when Atom Tickets sat down with Stuber co-stars Betty Gilpin (Becca) and Natalie Morales (Nicole), we wanted to know what it was like being in an action-comedy that actually allows the women to be, well, women. Three-dimensional and strong and flawed.

For Gilpin, she liked that her character, Becca, was messy and had messy emotions:

“So often in action movies, the women just feel so unrealistic to me. Like, oh, you’re not mad that he just went to the woods for three days without telling you and now you’re there greeting him at the door with, like, a glitter diaper and contour? I’d be like, ‘Where have you been?!’ I think this movie does a real service to the female side of things and we play real, three-dimensional people with jobs and ambitions and lives outside of the male characters.”

“I would love to see a glitter diaper and contoured female lead of a movie,” laughed Morales. As for her, she got to exhibit her fierce side, with Nicole stepping right into the action. But as it turns out, filming a scene where she’s shooting a gun was a little nerve-wracking on a number of levels:

“That was the first scene I shot – very intense. It was so fun,” revealed Morales.

Not only was that the very first scene on her first day, but there was also an extra layer of nerves considering who she was pointing the gun at: “I’m always very cautious on movie sets and in general when guns are around, so it was a little bit… I’m just very aware of hypersensitivity to that, the dangers that can happen and have happened, so there was a little bit of that in the back of my head, of just being cautious because I am pointing a gun at a lot of people, some of which are the stars of the movie. Not that other people don’t matter! But–”

“It would be an expensive mistake,” finished Gilpin.

“Yeah, I mean, if I clip someone who is an AC, that would be horrible, but the movie could go on!”

Gilpin chimed in: “Dave Bautista’s bicep is more expensive, definitely.”

You can see the pair of them talking about the power of messy women and goofing around with each other in the full interview below:
