Each week on Atom Insider, we break down the box office numbers for all of the biggest films opening in theaters. This week, a new sci-fi blockbuster leads the 4-day weekend as romantic comedies and under-performing sequels compete for the Top 5.

This Week’s Top Earner – ‘Alita: Battle Angel’

Don’t underestimate James Cameron. He co-wrote and co-produced Fox’s latest franchise starter, which opened in the U.S. with $34.3 million over President’s Day weekend. But the real cause for celebration is the film’s victory overseas, collecting an additional $54 million in three days. And the film hasn’t even dropped in China and Japan yet.

At $137.3 million worldwide in just its first week off of a reportedly $170-200 million budget, it’s looking like Alita: Battle Angel may soldier on with a sequel, after all. That’s assuming China and Japan really show up for this film over the next few weeks to make this one a worldwide hit.

Second Place  – ‘The LEGO Movie: The Second Part’

WB’s follow up to the wildly successful LEGO Movie slipped just 19% this week, clinching the #2 spot easily with $27.3 million domestic. Overseas, the film isn’t doing…awesome. The LEGO Movie 2: The Second Part only made $12 million internationally, and with a new animated franchise sequel dropping next week, it’ll gain some tough competition as we move into a crowded spring season.

Still, the film has made $10.34 million worldwide off of a reported budget of $99 million, so it will likely be a modest hit for WB. Just not the supersized winner the first film was.

And Third – ‘Isn’t It Romantic’

Couples had plenty to see this weekend, and quite a few chose Rebel Wilson’s romantic comedy parody Isn’t It Romantic. The film brought in a solid $16.6 million domestically, securing its #3 spot. Debuting on Wednesday helped it as well because the film now has $22.8 million just in the U.S. Its reported budget is $31 million, so Warner Bros now has two decent hits this week in the Top 3 box office.

Rounding Out The Rest Of The Box Office

Paramount’s own high-concept romantic comedy, What Men Want, dropped two spots to #4 this weekend after making $12.3 million domestically. It played well all week, however, and has a worldwide total of $40 million (mostly in the U.S.), which is double its reported budget of $20 million. (You can our review here.)

Despite opening this weekend in over 3200 theaters, Universal’s slasher/sci-fi comedy Happy Death Day 2U underperformed. It only made $11 million domestically, just barely landing the #5 spot. Thanks to a low $9 million budget, the film is already doing fine at $26.5 million worldwide, but this has to sting for a franchise that looked like the next big thing.

Cold Pursuit didn’t do so hot, either. The Lionsgate film dropped three spots to #6 in its second week after making just $7 million domestic ($22.1 million total). The reported budget for this one might be as high as $60 million, so this is looking like a tough loss for the studio. (Read our review here.)

Once again, The Upside held on to its lead over Glass, despite hanging in that film’s shadow for a while. They both grabbed the #7 and #8 spot respectively, despite each one losing hundreds of theaters.

The Prodigy dropped a few spots to #9 this week, just barely hanging on to the Top 10 with $3.6 million in its second week. Orion’s supernatural horror is fading fast, but its low $6 million budget and worldwide haul of $11.5 million will keep it in the black.

Finally, Universal’s Green Book fell three spots to #10 with $3.4 million domestically. With the Oscars almost upon us, it looks like its awards season revival is on its last legs, now at $127 million worldwide in its 14th week.

And They’re Out

Three films said goodbye to the Top 10 this week. Aquaman dropped four spots to #12, but Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse held on just a little bit longer at #11, beating Aquaman for the first time. Miss Bala fell all the way down to #16 in its 3rd weekend, just barely breaking even with its production budget as now it exits the Top 10.

Check back with Atom Insider later this week as we preview all the new releases hitting theaters this Friday.
